Capoeira with Lorem & Canela

Capoeira with Lorem & Canela

A “roda” refers to the circle that Capoeira player’s form inside of which the game is played. Those forming the roda are as important to the game as the two players inside—adding to the energy and rhythm of the game by clapping their hands, singing choruses of Capoeira, and playing instruments. The game of Capoeira requires the use of intuition and foresight and does not rely solely on the use of physical strength. During the game the capoeiristas skilfully expose the limitations of their opponents using the ginga to move around and engage in playful attacks and counterattacks thus better enabling themselves to discover their personal power. The idea is to escape and respond to the opponent using various techniques always playing to the rhythm of the berimbau.

Monitor Lorem has been playing Capoeira for 19 years and has been teaching for 15 of those years. Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil Lorem moved to Lisbon Portugal at a young age. A talented trampoline gymnast Lorem was keen to extend his skills into the Martial Arts. He first trained with Mestre Abidula but after a short time began training with Mestre Sargento. He moved to Australia in 2003 and has been instrumental in developing Capoeira in Melbourne and Australia. He is one of the founding members of the Oz Capoeira Association, OCA, which runs specific events aimed at bringing the Australian Capoeira community together. For the past few years Lorem has been fundraising thru his Capoeira School in Melbourne to aid Rio street kids. Lorem’s strong humanitarian values have incited him to start a non profit organisation called “Corazon de Zumbi” in 2011 aimed at aiding street kids in Brazil.

Capoeira first called Canela to play back in 2003.  Since then she has trained in Melbourne, Brazil, and London. As an artist Canela has often moved about but Capoeira remains in her heart.   For the past year Canela has been running Capoeira weekly classes for youth, families & beginners under the guidance of her teacher Lorem. Together they have successfully held several workshops in Byron Bay to fundraise for flood victims & street kids in Rio. Canela has recently returned from teaching primary school children Capoeira, music & dance in Sri Lanka.
